“When you don’t have any money, the problem is food. When you have money, it’s sex. When you have both, it’s health.” - anonymous
Without health, not much else seems to matter, but unfortunately, we don’t care about our health until something bad happens. During the time I lived in India, I didn’t have healthcare. I was simply like one of the millions of people who lived there. I walked out of my room and into the streets of India, and the thought would cross my mind, “I hope I make it back in one piece.”

I find it interesting that humans have created this thing called time, yet many of us have become enslaved by our own creation. The old saying “time is money” implies that money and time are not only valuable but also finite. It’s this feeling of scarcity that drives people into a silent madness, a race against time itself. This perception of time has created an additional pressure in the everyday existence of our lives, which we have done to our own selves. How can we live so that time works for us and not against us?

When was the last time you were in a store and saw a child having a temper tantrum because they weren’t getting what they wanted? Adults are often the same way. Though we don’t “act out” in the same way, we carry it inside as inner tension. We become unhappy when we don’t get what we want.
The ancient texts explain that suffering happens because of attachment. This could be attachment to being good, right, expectations, anything. It is not what we are attached to, it is the act of attachment itself. It is our relationship to what causes our suffering.

The Daoists and yogis used the power of space to elevate their inner power and knowledge. They did this by cultivating time for reflection, quiet and meditation. These ancient practices of “non-doing” for the purpose of self-actualization and wisdom have been under-emphasized in the West. It makes me wonder if this is why things have manifested the way they have as part of this “economic” crisis, or perhaps what may truly be a “spiritual” crisis. Imagine if our corporate leaders took time to pause and contemplate what they were creating?
What happens when we lack space in our lives? We will often feel overwhelmed, chaotic, stressed. The likelihood of making poor decisions increases meaningfully; we will tend to make hasty decisions– from the food we eat, to the way we communicate. This affects all aspects of our life, particularly our perspective. It’s the stuff mid-life crises are made of, when all of a sudden, you wake up and wonder what your life is for.

Once we start living at a certain rate it can be ever more difficult to slow down. Consider kinetic energy; it takes much more energy to slow down a ball that is rolling at a faster rate. You might find that even when you finally get time with nothing to do, it may be hard for you to really let go and relax. We have become so absorbed with doing and material survival that we have lost touch with what is happening to us.
As our lifestyles become more complex, we see more stress-related diseases such as insomnia, hypertension, ADD & chronic fatigue. The problem lies not just in the economy or global warfare, it is the tension we experience in our every day lives.

I wondered what keeps people from following their dreams. The obvious answer is fear. But what is it about fear that keeps us immobilized? What is the difference between someone who is satisfied with the status quo and someone who yearns to grow?
As humans, like anything else in nature, we are built to evolve. When we are not in a process of learning and growing, we stagnate, become bored and dissatisfied. However, many people are unwilling to take the risks to do something about their lives.

Are you aware of what your body tells you? Every thought and emotion we have creates a physiological response in the body. Considering that the average human has over 12,000 thoughts per day, we would probably want to start thinking about what kind of thoughts we are entertaining.

This is a powerful exchange because it displays great leadership and strength in extreme crisis. It most noticeably portrays the importance of perception and how perception is critical to success or failure.

The way we see things, interpret them and respond accordingly can greatly determine the success of any outcome. However, our perception is often based on our own limited experience or that of the group. This happens in leadership and corporations during downturns. When things seem bad, people and organizations pull back and try to hold on to what they have in order to “stay alive.” We become less inclined to seek new endeavors or take risks.

The tradition of new year’s resolutions is known to have started 4,000 years ago by the Babylonians, as well as the ancient civilizations of Rome and China. Who knows how successful they were in making their goals a reality, but if history repeats itself, I’d imagine it would be as it is now: plenty of good intention with little to no follow-through.
Whether you want to lose weight or drop a bad habit, here are some key ingredients to succeed in your follow-through this year:
